Meatless Monday: Black Bean Burgers

Ever since I discovered making my own vegetarian burgers is really easy, I have tried several recipes. This is my first time making burgers from black beans though, because I was finally able to find canned ones :) Anyway, these burgers are based on the Quick Burgers from the Everyday Happy Herbivore Cookbook but I did adapt them because Zeronic doesn't fancy mustard and we couldn't find onion powder. So below I will share my adapted version.

Quick Black Bean Burgers (makes 4)
- 1 can of black beans
- 2 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tbsp smokey BBQ sauce
- 1 spring onion
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1/3 cup instant oats

Mash the black beans in a large bowl with a fork until mostly pureed, but still with some halves and whole beans in the mixture. Chop the green onions and add those. Also mix in the two sauces and the garlic powder. Stir well. Lastly mix in oats and stir again. Divide the mixture in 4 equal portions and form patties. Pre heat the oven to 200 degrees (180 for microwave oven) and place the patties on a baking sheet. Bake in the oven for 10 minutes, turn and bake for another 5 minutes. Serve them on a bun with sauces, lettuce etc. or with fries, mushrooms and salad.

This post is part of Midnight Maniac Meatless Mondays.
MMMM is a weekly carnival dedicated to those interested in improving their personal health and the health of the planet by reducing meat consumption one day a week. Every Monday you have a chance to feature a link to something meatless. It doesn’t have to be a recipe {although that would be nice}, it can be a picture of a meatless meal you ate that week, an interesting article you read about meat consumption, a post on your blog about going meatless, perhaps a post on someone else’s blog you found helpful, anything Meatless Monday appropriate.

  3. I'm sure I asked you about the amount of mustard and onion powder in the original recipe... But my comment isn't here?! Did we tweet about it? #confused

  4. It's hard to reproduce this if you don't know what size can beans you used. Do you have a weight? :) And what was the original with mustard and onionpowder? Also curious!
