#90 - Wrap & Veggies bento in a new box

Sadly I had to say goodbye to two of my bento boxes. I had them for a long time. Maybe 4 or 5 years, but the print on the lids has totally vanished.

I did love the print on these boxes. It was simple and elegant. But as you can see, they had their best time. Maybe I could repaint the lids myself, but I need to look up more information on that. If you have any ideas on this, please let me know. The lids of most of my sauce cups, weren't any better so I decided a while ago that it was time to get a new box and new cups.

Sorry for the bad quality of the pictures. I had almost no daylight at all today and while it looks like the pics are taken at night, I actually took them this morning. I choose for an almost square bento box. I have one of them already and I find them very easy to use and they can hold much more than I thought at first. I actually use these more often than the more common ones that are shown above and I noticed that having only one wasn't handy when Nick and I needed a bento at the same time. I had my eye on this clean and simple bird design for a while now, so I am glad I was able to buy it. I also bought new cute Ms Bunny and Stitch sauce cups :)

Today I used the bento for the first time. Zeronic starts his first day at work today! He finally has a job again and now works at a local vegetable and fruit store :) As my regular readers know, most of my bento are vegetarian since I don't eat meat and even Zeronic's bento are often vegetarian. But he wanted to buy some meat this time, so I made wraps with that. In the sausage roll ups is some herbal cheese and there is actually a double layer of wrap in the bento box. In the other tier there are stir fried paprika, courgette, spring onions and quorn pieces in a lemon grass sauce. Since Zeronic now works again, this blog will be updated with actual bento more often :) But I did like the way I used the blog during Zeronic's days of unemployment so it will become a mix now of bento, regular recipes and reviews. The change you might notice is that it will get updated more often again :)

Product review: Wiener cutter mold - Crab, Fish, Penguin

The up side from having a boyfriend who eats meat, is that I still get to try these cute wiener cutters :) I know I am not the one who usually goes for a cute bento. But truth be told, I actually like cute! Especially if it can be done in an easy way. Since CasaBento had the wiener cutters on discount, I decided to order them to try.

On the package were pictures how you had to use them, but it speaks for itself really. My expectations were quite high since there was this cute image on the package. However it wasn't really meant to be. After I used the cutters on the wieners and tossed them in the pan, to let the ends curl and shape like with octodogs, it didn't really happen. In fact, with the crab and the penguin shape you don't really see much at all. The downside of the penguin mold was also that the meat sticks in the cut out for the beak and I had to get it out with a toothpick. And I actually had to make the cuts more visible with a small knife. The only shape I like, is the fish. That actually came out pretty cute. Maybe I did something wrong, that it didn't turn out as good as on the package. That could be since I can't actually read Japanese, so possibly I skipped something. Please enlighten me if you know, but for now I am a bit disappointed with the outcome. It is not worth the hassle for this mediocre result. (with exception of the cute fish)

The bento (49) contains: 2 pieces of vegetarian Mediterranean quiche (that was the last of it!), a potato dish with broccoli, courgette and mushrooms, wieners, mandarin & grapes.

New bento box

Because the boyfriend works in shifts, he also has to have dinner at work on a regular base. Since the normal 2-tier bento left him a bit peckish, resulting him raiding the fridge when he got home, I decided he needed a bigger box and thus I ordered one on e-bay. Or so I thought...

This set arrived yesterday. According to the description on e-bay it was supposed to be larger then the ones I had, but I was kinda disappointed when it arrived because the box doesn't seem bigger at all. In fact I wonder if it isn't smaller then the average 2-tier box. It seems that on a picture the box seems bigger, which can be a bit misleading. Aside from that it is not a bad buy.

The bottom lid is deeper then average, however you can't fill it till the top because the lid closes different, so you need to take that into account when filling it up. That is because the upper tier fits snugly into the bottom one. There is plenty of space in the bottom tier though, but not so much in the upper one. What I do miss is the extra lid when you can sneak in some biscuits or other small goodies. It does seem to close better then the rectangular 2-tier box from the same series. The box is very sturdy and it will certainly be used alongside the others. But it doesn't fit the purpose for which I bought this box so the hunt continues. I do find the shape and size very cute though :) And, not entirely unimportant, the box is microwave safe. But do remember to take the lids off :)

I ordered these cute long picks with the bento box :) I already discovered they are very handy and much nicer then using toothpicks ;)
