Dutch Baking: Oudewijvenkoek

Just a quick post today to show you all how the baking mix I got from Groningen in my latest Foodie Pen Pal Package. It is a mix for oudewijvenkoek (old maidens cake).

We made it on Monday and it was a really easy recipe. We used the mix, 1 egg, 200 ml milk and 35 gr apple syrup. It is a bit of a gingerbread cake. (for the Dutchies, it tastes like taai taai pop). I really like this cake and I just might have to order another mix. Luckily they have a website so I don't have to travel all the way up to Groningen. Visit bakboerderij for this mix and more :)

Foodie Penpals November 2012

When I visited De Bakparade, one of my favorite Dutch baking blogs, I came across the concept of Foodie Pen Pals. People are matched and send a package full of foodie stuff to another person and also get one back from a different person. I always love to try new things and that is why I signed up! This is the second month I am participating.

Judith, my foodie penpal who was sending to me, also came from the Netherlands. It is true that getting a package from your own country is less exciting than getting one from a different country but this post will prove that getting a package from your own country doesn't have to be boring at all!

By my request I got a package with all kinds of local goodies! Because she lives way north in Groningen and I live more south, I didn't know much of the local products there so it was a fun package to get!

Not so local but much welcome are these mixed chocolate nuts! It was a good quality mix and I enjoyed it very much! I also got a sachet of Aspen Mulling cider spices. I never heard of them but there was a print out on how to use them. I am very excited about it because there are so many possibilities. But I haven't used them yet.

The bag of Grunneger Klaai Kloeten was eaten by my BF Zeronic ;) It is a kind of liqorice that he loves very much. All though we never had this specific ones. Next to it is a small jar of Groningse mustard. I am curious if it will taste different from other brands :)

Now the item I am most excited about! A bakemix for "Oudewijvenkoek"! I have no clue what kind of cake this is going to be, but it smells really nice! I also looked on the website and saw more delicious goodies. This will be baked soon and then I will post about it on the blog. Last is warming tea, a special winter blend. I came across this tea before on a market of some sort, but never tried it. I love tea so that is always a good gift to get!

Of course I also sent a package. My foodie penpal was Sally. Check out her blog to see what she thought of my package! If you want to join Foodie Penpals (Europe) check out the banner in the side bar on the left!

Foodie Pen Pals - October 2012

When I visited De Bakparade, one of my favorite Dutch baking blogs, I came across the concept of Foodie Pen Pals. People are matched and send a package full of foodie stuff to another person and also get one back from a different person. I always love to try new things and that is why I signed up! This is my first package I received.

My package came from the UK and was sent to me by penpal Andrea. I was allowed to give your preferences and I love to try candy the most so I got a lot of that! It is a really great package!

These are Fruit Rocks and Coconut Ice. Both traditional candy. I haven't tried them yet but I am very curious. I love coconut, so I am sure I will like those. I also got some goodies from Scotland like these Shortbread Fingers. I never had those, but ever since I watched the British Bake Off, I wanted to try some and now I finally can :)

Another Scottish treat I got is a bag of tablet. I heard of this before, but never had them. And there is also vanilla fudge. My boyfriend really loves fudge type of things, so I have no choice but to share them ;) There is also English tea in a cute telephone booth tin (which I love!) and a tiny jar of orange marmelade to have English breakfast. And a lovely card with cupcakes!

Last but not least are Cadbury Fingers. I love Cadbury chocolate and whenever my friends visit the UK or UK friends visit the Netherlands, I ask for Cadbury buttons. I never had these fingers before, but I am sure I will like them!

Andrea, thank you so much for all the lovely goodies. I had a great first experience with foodie pen pals and I will join in November once more :)

Edit: I have tasted some of it already now and my favorite so far are the shortbread fingers! They are so good, that I just have to make an attempt to bake my own! The Cadbury fingers we also great! And indeed, one does lead to another ;) The tablet is incredibly sweet. The rest I haven't tried yet.

I got to send my package to Sarah. Please look at her blog what she thought of my package :)
In the left sidebar there is the foodie pen pal button which will take you to the site, if you are interested to know more. I am part of the European group, but there is a USA group as well.
